Joe Emma and Kenneth Christopher, both of Alazan, passed away tragically in Buna, Texas on Monday, July 15, 2019.  Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at Laird Funeral Home with Robbyn Hunt and Darrell Brown officiating.  Interment will follow at Alazan Cemetery.

Joe Emma Christopher, 93, and Kenneth R. Christopher, 97, both being long time residents of Alazan, passed away together in their Buna, Texas home in the early morning hours of Monday, July 15, 2019.  They were both born in Alazan and made that their home.  The two knew each other as young children and even worked the sharecropping fields side by side.  In 1944, they joined together as one when they were married.  Kenneth, or Buddy as most knew him, joined the military where he guarded prisoners of war and ran telephone lines.  When the boys were born, he and Joe Emma, known as “Granni”, opened a grocery store on Durst Street in Nacogdoches.  In 1944, he took a job with Texaco until he was drafted into the military again.  When he returned home, he was able to go back to work at Texaco and retired after 32 years, at the age of 62.  Buddy and Joe Emma then lived in Buna, where they had themselves a farm including cows, pigs, chickens, veggies, berries, fruit trees, honey-bees, grapes, and most anything else they could grow or raise.  Buddy was a kind-hearted and quiet man of few words.  Joe Emma, on the other hand was more verbal about things, and therefore they complimented each other perfectly.  She was by her husband’s side through every minute of their marriage.  She supported him, loved him, and stood with him, and she was honored to be his wife, as he was to be her husband.  She enjoyed quilting, sewing, and cooking.  Their lives were lived together.  They did everything together.  They were the epitome of what husband and wife should be because everything they done or decided, was done as one.  Joe Emma and Kenneth were very proud of the life they lived and their families and the accomplishments they have made.  Their sons were the best parts of them both.  Having grandchildren was a bright spot for them and they both loved them so very much.  The stories they told were precious to hear and the family would listen to them, as they rocked in their chairs, until they were tired of telling them.

Although Joe Emma and Buddy have spent time in other places, they always called Alazan home.  They went church wherever they were and most recently enjoyed attending the Methodist Church in Silsbee with Kirk. When they were at home, they attended Alazan Congregational Methodist Church with Robbyn Hunt.  They made sure their boys were raised in a home where God took first priority.  Saturdays were for Sunday School lessons, and Sundays were for church.  Period.

These two precious souls were a blessing to all who met and knew them.  They passed out hugs to whomever needed it and proclaimed “God Bless” to each of them.  Although their death was not expected, the comfort in it all is that they remained together, just as they had lived their lives.  They will be greatly missed and remembered as the great couple that showed so many how a marriage should be.

Joe Emma and Buddy are survived by their children, Kenneth Christopher and his wife, Sharon of Buna, Doug “D.J.” Christopher and his wife, Linda of Buna and Kirk R. Christopher of Buna; Joe Emma’s sister, Gussie Mullican of California and her sisters-in-law, Isabelle Johnson of Alazan and Theda Johnson of Nacogdoches; Buddy’s sister-in-law, Nell Christopher of Nederland; 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren; as well as many other close family members and friends.
