James Steven ‘Steve’ Brown of Rosenberg, Texas, age 90, passed away on December 15, 2017 along with his wife of almost 36 years, Ella Brown. He was born January 27, 1927 in Martinsville, Texas and reared in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Steve served his country in World War II in the US Coast Guard with a special assignment to the Merchant Marines. An avid reader and a green thumb, Steve took pride in maintaining a beautiful yard.

Steve served a total of 18 years in law enforcement. He loved enforcing the law and served 14 of those years as Assistant Chief of Police in Richmond. He was commissioned by Governor Dolph Briscoe as a Certified Advanced Law Enforcement Officer by the State of Texas at Texas A&M University. He is certified in Kidnapping and Hostage Situations from the FBI, Jail Operations from the United States Department of Justice’s Bureau of Prisons, and in Criminal Investigation from Texas A&M University. He also attended the College of The Mainland in Texas City, and prior to coming to Richmond, he graduated from the Victoria Police Academy, served as sergeant of the Port Lavaca Police Department, and was a member of the Pasadena Mounted Police Posse.

Steve is a past member of the Richmond Fire Department, the Rosenberg Richmond Optimist Club and was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Rosenberg.

He is preceded in death by his parents James McKnight Brown and Grace Crawford Brown, son Taylor Brown, sisters Helena McKewen Thrash and Kathryn Wheeler McNeal, brother Ralph Brown, and nephew Don Wheeler. He was also preceded in death by step-daughter Sharon Seiler Davis whom he loved as his very own.

Survivors include daughters Sally Kubecka and husband David of Houston, Melody Tylich of Houston and husband Jim, sister-in-law Marion Brown of Canyon Lake, and daughter-in-law Nancy Brown Trantham of Richardson. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Mildred Wheeler of Flower Mound, Bob and Linda Wheeler of Nederland, Johnny Brown of Canyon Lake, Wendy McKewen Floyd and husband Thad of Nacogdoches, and Weita Wheeler of Nederland. Grandchildren include Sterling Kubecka of Houston, Garland Kubecka of Pearland, and April Buckingham and husband Brian of Denton. Step-children are son-in-law Syd “Ren” Davis III of Richmond, and Charles E. Seiler and wife Patty Dornbach Seiler of Richmond. Step-grandchildren are Penny Davis Meek of Richmond, Julie Davis Gaston and husband Robert of Needville, Amy Davis Dybala and husband Chris of Rosenberg, Brent Seiler and Amber Gallagher of Rosenberg, Nathan Seiler and Jennifer Spivey of Richmond, Krissy Lacey and husband Chris of New Braunfels, and Elissa Norris and husband Josh of Cypress. Great-grandchildren include Alexa Ivory, Austin Buckingham, and Bailey Buckingham. Step-great grandchildren are Cody Meek, Morgan Meek, Carter Norris, and Brody Norris.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 21, 2017, in the chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 22, 2017 in the chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg with interment following at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg.
