Wintford George Birdwell

1921-2016 Wintford George Birdwell, long time Kountze resident, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on January 12, 2016 at the age of 94. Wintford was born January 27, 1921 in Nacogdoches, Texas, one of six children of George Samuel and Sarah Ada Birdwell. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a medic in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba with his pet spider monkey Jocko. Upon return from Naval service he joined the Birdwell brothers in thriving retail businesses around East Texas and opened Birdwell's Department Store in Kountze in 1946. He and his lovely gracious wife Fay and daughter Celeste made their home in Hardin County where he served as multi-term mayor of Kountze and Emergency Management Coordinator. Mr. Birdwell was a gregarious man, a jokester with a twinkle in his eye who never met a stranger. Often a lightening rod in Hardin County politics and frequently headlined in The Kountze News, his sense of civic duty kept Mr. Birdwell at the forefront of politics for decades. In his free time, he liked to hunt, golf and spend time with family. In 2014, The Birdwells moved to be near their daughter in San Marcos, Texas. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Fay; his daughter Celeste, granddaughter Nicole and her father Michael A. Salafia, Nicole's husband Matt Norton and great grandson Henry; his brother Rayford and wife Joyce, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial for Mr. Birdwell was held January 15th in San Marcos. It was a glorious sunny day on the sacred San Marcos River with standing room only at the service... an event he would have loved, working the crowd and flashing his magnificent smile responding when asked how he fared, very well for Birdwell.
