Edward Burt, 81, of Garrison, passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2007, after a long fight with cancer. He was born May 23, 1926, in Nacogdoches County to Pink Cooper Burt and Mollie Powers Burt, and he married Audrey Boatman on May 16, 1946. Services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2007, at Laird Funeral Home in Nacogdoches with the Reverend Travis Lunsford officiating; interment at Libby Cemetery. Edward spent his early years farming, prior to World War II. He enlisted in the United States Army July 28, 1944, and served as a rifleman in the 37th Infantry Division, Philippines. After completing his tour in the Philippines he was transferred to the United States Military Academy (West Point) as a jungle warfare instructor for officer candidates. After completing his enlistment, he moved to Arizona with his wife, Audrey, and three children. Edward began a career with Magma Copper Mine in San Manuel, which lasted for 30 years. He retired and moved back to East Texas where he and Audrey settled outside of Garrison. Edward is survived by his wife, Audrey; his son, Edward Harroll; daughter-in-law, Charlene Burt; daughter; Mollie Annett; son-in-law, Robert Duane Irvin Sr.; grandchildren, Steven Michael Burt, James Edward Tipton, Stacey Lynn (Burt) Hefton, Raeanne Denise (Burt) Love, Christine Michelle (Tipton/Irvin) Christian, Michael Harroll Burt, Sherry Diane (Burt) Kestid, Robert Duane Irvin Jr. and Maranda Donnell Burt; great-grandchildren, Cody Lee Westbrook, Ashley Hefton, Lauren Hefton, Jacob Westbrook, Casey Tipton, Isabel Tipton, Brittany Burt, Brandy Burt, Brooke Burt, Hannah Campanella/Tipton, Michael Campanella/Tipton, Kyle Burt, Amberleigh Burt, Morgan Christian, Stormy Irvin, Hailey Irvin, Sonny Irvin, Carly Irvin. Edward was preceded in death by his son, Don Howard Burt; and his son-in-law, James Lee Tipton. Edward was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be missed by everyone whom his kind heart ever encountered. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. today. Laird Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
