Robert Leon “Sonny” Battle passed away Friday, Aug. 6, 2021. He was 94.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at Laird Funeral Home with interment to follow in Swift Cemetery. The Rev. Paul Sever, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Nacogdoches, will officiate.

Preceding the service, visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at Laird Funeral Home.

Born Dec. 1, 1926, in the Mahl community, the son of Guy Talmadge and Naomi Oleta Baker Battle, Sonny grew up in the Shady Grove area of Nacogdoches County. He served in the U.S. Army in aftermath of World War II, stationed in the Philippine Islands. He and Wilma Louise King were married on Feb. 8, 1947. They soon moved to Houston where Sonny worked for Hughes Tool Company for 17 years. They returned to their hometown in the late 1960s to build and operate Sonny’s Drive in Grocery on State Hwy. 7 east for 15 years. After selling the store, Sonny continued his electronics communication business from his home shop, contracting with such entities as Owens-Illinois and Nacogdoches County.

Sonny and Wilma were volunteers at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital. They were loyal members of Calvary Baptist Church for more than 50 years until their health kept them from attending services. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Park Place Lodge #1147. Sonny and Wilma were married for more than 74 years.

Our father will be remembered for his devotion to his family and his church. He dedicated his life to caring for loved ones and providing a safe and loving home for his beloved wife and children. He loved being at home more than anything, in the comfort of his recliner, with “Gunsmoke” on the TV and our mom by his side.

In addition to his wife, Sonny is survived by his children, Jimmy Battle and wife, Ella, of Lufkin, and Robbie Battle Goodrich and husband, Scott, of Lake Nacogdoches. In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by his brother, Granvel Battle; and sisters, Dovie Williams, Gloria Henson, and his infant sister, Lana Joy Battle. He also leaves many beloved nieces and nephews to cherish his memory.

Pallbearers will be nephews, Guy Battle, Scott Battle, Jakie Henson, John Henson, Mike King and Bob Williams.

The family would like to thank those associated with Meadowview Place assisted living facility, Rock Haven Nursing Home, and Harbor Hospice for their loving care and kindness during the past several months.

The family requests that donations be made in Sonny’s memory to Calvary Baptist Church.
