Gayle Evans Ammons, 86, of Tomball, Texas, went home to be with the Lord February 22, 2010, surrounded by his family. He was born July 9, 1923, in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was one of two siblings born of Jim and Velma Sitton Ammons, also of Nacogdoches. After attending Stephen F. Austin University, he joined the U.S. Army June 10, 1943, and obtained the rank of master sergeant as a tank commander during World War II and the Korean conflict. He was awarded numerous decorations, including a Purple Heart in General Patton's 3rd Army during World War II and served in the 2nd Infantry Group, Mechanized Division in the Korean conflict. He was employed by various oil companies for over 40 years and retired from Transcontinental Pipeline Corporation in 1982. He is survived by his wife, Ezell Lindow Toler Ammons; brother, Jarvis T. Ammons of Nacogdoches; son,michael Jay Ammons of Sheveport, La.; and daughter, Ann Ammons Jackson of Martindale, Texas; stepsons, Terry Toler of Sanderson, Texas, Joe Toler and his wife, Linda Hoffart Toler, of Navasota, Texas, Roger Toler and his wife, Janice Mooney Tole,r of Cypress, Texas; grandchildren, Joshua Jackson of New Braunfels, Texas, Jeffery Ammons of Houston, Texas, Matthew Jackson and his wife, Christine Jackson, of Cedar Park, Texas, Melanie Ammons Cogburn and her husband, Clay Cogburn, of Houston, Texas, Billy Toler of Navasota, Texas, Anne Toler and Joe Toler Jr. of College Station, Texas, Laura Toler-Anderson and her husband, Andrew Anderson, of College Station, Cody Toler of Houston, Texas, Bryce Toler, Travis Toler and Sam Toler of Cypress, Texas; great-grandchildren, Ryan Jackson of New Braunfels, Texas, Cooper Cogburn of Houston, Texas, Caylor Jackson of New Braunfels, Texas, and Riley Jackson or Cedar Park, Texas; nieces and nephews, Rose Ammons Stanaland and her husband, Alvin Stanaland, Mark Ammons of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Michael Ammons of Houston, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents Jim and Velma Ammons; wife, Margaret Elzner Ammons (1926-1979); son, Jim Ammons (1951-2004); and son, Jon Ammons (1956-2007). Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2010 at Cason-Monk Funeral Directors located at 5400 North Street, Nacogdoches, Texas. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 27, 2010, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, 5400 North St, Nacogdoches. After the funeral service, interment will be held at the Rock Springs Cemetery just outside Nacogdoches, Texas.
