The Daily Sentinel

At North Street Church of Christ, food provided by the Harvest House is distributed to more than 700 families every month. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays USDA commodities are handed out with Thursday designated as produce day. Recently, a typical “serving” for a family of two included: a dozen eggs, a loaf of French bread, a cinnamon crumb cake, a can of minestrone soup, two packages of Ramen Noodle soups, a can of green beans, a single meat lasagna, two yogurts, canned pineapple, Velveeta shell and cheese serving for one, a can of biscuits and a can of corn. Volunteers said the selection changes weekly. ~Excerpt written by Sherry Daniel

About Sonshine School

Sonshine School is a family outreach ministry of North Street Church of Christ, which began as a Mother's Day Out program in 1987. It originally served parents and their children three days a week until 2000 — when it was expanded to a five-day-a-week program and became a state-licensed facility.

At Sonshine School we provide a safe place to learn about God through Bible stories, songs and prayer. Our classes are divided in a manner that allows teachers to provide age-appropriate learning. Our mission is to share the love of Jesus with students, parents and the community.

Trail Life

Christ-Centered. Boy-Focused.

Trail Life USA is a church-based, Christ-centered, boy-focused mentoring and discipleship journey that speaks to the heart of a boy. Established on timeless values derived from the Bible and set in the context of outdoor adventure, boys from kindergarten through 12th grade are engaged in a troop setting by male mentors where they are challenged to grow in character, understand their purpose, serve their community and develop practical leadership skills to carry out the mission for which they were created.

The Yellow House

The Yellow House is so much more than a two-story brick building across the street from SFA campus. It is hugs and laughter and songs, it’s long talks on the back porch swing with friends. It’s midnight devotionals at sleepovers, it’s camp outs and float trips and retreats.

It’s volleyball on the sand court out back, it’s ping pong and cooking spaghetti in the kitchen. It’s helping the homeless, taking in the lonely, and spending time with friends. It’s snoozing on the couch and late night studying for a test. In other words, for hundreds of university students over the years it’s been simply, “Home.”

Our early years were located in a “little Yellow House,” hence the name. We are directed by the North Street Church of Christ in Nacogdoches, and are supported by a number of congregations and individuals. Students from all denominations have found a home and been welcomed at the Yellow House.

The Yellow House exists because of and for university students. Specifically, we are a ministry which reaches out to help the students of Stephen F. Austin State University. To reach students, the Yellow House offers an informal place to relax, study, play, pray, grow spiritually, and make and be with friends.

We have Bible studies, devotionals, retreats, mission trips, small groups, free Wednesday lunch and speaker, free Thursday night meal and devotional, service activities, and a lot of good hang out time.

We point students to Jesus, Our Savior, and encourage spiritual values and spiritual growth. We strive to keep an informal and friendly atmosphere and always seek to be of service to students.

You are welcome to come to any or all of the scheduled events/activities, and of course, the Yellow House is open almost any time for you to come by and hang out. We hope to see you there!

Scotty Spake: Yellow House Campus Minister

Scotty Spake is currently the minister to our university students. Scotty has been in ministry for over 10 years. He began in Montgomery, Alabama, as a youth minister. He worked there with the Dairaida congregation while finishing his Bible degree at Faulkner University in the summer of 1997. After graduating from Faulkner, he married his wife Tammy. They moved to Nacogdoches in 1999, right after the birth of their first daughter, Hazel Renae.

He served as the North Street Youth Minister for two years before moving back to Alabama to be close to family members. Before leaving Texas, their second daughter, Hannah Mae was born. After serving as Youth and Family Minister at Cullman Church of Christ for a year, Scotty was given an opportunity to enter campus ministry. After a successful two and a half years at Troy University Christian Center, Scotty was given the opportunity to return to Nacogdoches as the Yellow House campus minister.
