aniel Webb Harkness was born May 10, 1923 in Melrose, Nacogdoches County, Texas, USA. The son of Lemuel Arlington Harkness (1890-1947) and Estelle Ethel Simmons (1901-1987). Daniel married Juanita Fults on August 12, 1942 in Orange, Texas. Daniel entered the Army in 1943, training at Camp McCain Mississippi, and Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He served in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. He was awarded The ATO Ribbon, EAME Ribbon, 3 bronze stars, a good conduct medal, and a victory medal. He was discharged in 1945.
