The Lord Jesus Christ came gently for E.R. "Buddy" Copeland on October 27th, 2004 at his earthly home after a brief illness. Buddy passed from this life to his eternal home prepared by his Savior especially for him. His family and friends miss him deeply but would not call him back, even if we could. Buddy was beloved husband, father, and "PaPa" to his family as well as a faithful member of Valley View Baptist Church in Midland.
Buddy served with distinction in the United States Army in World War II. He came ashore in Normandy on June 7th, 1944 on Omaha Beach. Wounded twice in battle and receiving two Purple Hearts, he served with the Second Infantry Division until VE Day. He never spoke much of the horrors of war he experienced, but his pride in his country was deep and abiding and he was always humbled by the opportunity to serve this great nation. The shrapnel from German guns he bore in his body for over sixty years served as a daily reminder to him of the cost of freedom. He instilled that same pride and respect for America in every member of his family. We are sure Buddy heard our Lord say "Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord."
Buddy worked in the oilfields of West Texas for many years and was widely known and loved. He took great pride in his work.
His faithful wife of 53 years, Earcille, his parents and one grandchild preceded Buddy in death. His precious second wife Hazel, whom the Lord provided to make his last years a joy and blessing, survives him. Two daughters and two sons, Barbara Brem and her husband Ray of Victoria, Texas, Brenda Campbell and her husband Pete of Midland, Texas, Jackie Copeland and his wife Alma of Dallas, Texas, and Jimmy Copeland of Midland, Texas as well as nine grand children and eleven great grand children also survive him. Two sisters, Agnes Randall and Gertrude Perkins, both of Garrison, Texas also survive.
A celebration of Buddy's homecoming will be held at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel in Midland at 4:00 P.M. Friday, October 29, 2004 with Reverend Robert Frazier and Reverend Pete Campbell officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, October 31, 2004 at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Garrison, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
